Good News Quartet

About The Group The Good News Quartet was a gospel group. Around 1949, they backed Buddy Starcher on a couple of his Columbia Records recordings. The group was organized by Shorty Yeaworth, who knew the other fellows from previous musical endeavors. The group stayed together for about two years until Ted and Ansell graduated from the seminary. Mr. David George writes that the group got hired to do the background singing for Buddy Starcher on one of his Columbia sessions. One of the songs they recorded was, "Beyond the Sunset.". Between verses, Buddy recited the well-known tear-jerking poem, "Should you go first and I remain." The recording was done at the Columbia Studios in New York City. Dave notes that when they were riding up the elevator to the studio, they rode along with Burl Ives. It was a memorable day. Dave still has a copy of that 78 rpm record, 61 years later. Dave George, one of the group's members relates that one thing he remembered about Buddy Starcher was his "...marvelous gift for telling a story."
