Weaver Brothers

About The Group Vance and Wiley Weaver were two musical brothers who were natives of Grayson County, Virginia who moved to Beckley, West Virginia in early adulthood. They were unrelated to the better-known vaudeville and motion picture team of the Weaver Brothers and Elvira. Wiley (September 26, 1896 — September 28, 1983) played guitar and Vance (December 19, 1899 ‐ August 26, 1969) played banjo. In West Virginia they became part of the musical groups associated with Roy Harvey who played on their record as did a fiddler named Odell Smith (1906-1959). Not surprisingly, their music displayed a Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers influence. The Weavers recorded four numbers for Columbia in October 1929 in Johnson City, Tennessee. However, only two were released. Both Weavers worked in coal mining although Vance, who remained single, ultimately retired to Ashe County, North Carolina.
