About The Artist
Hillbilly John and Honey was actually a husband-wife act that was appearing on radio station WPAL out of Charleston, South Carolina in 1954. Their real names were Mr. and Mrs. John Ingold. They were on the air each week about 30 hours, doing a variety of tasks, playing disc jockey and live entertainment shows. Even then perhaps 'demographics' were sneaking into the mindset as they made a point to note that their fan mail came in droves from both 'young and old' alike.
Hillbilly John and Honey were both natives of Anson County, North Carolina. Both had also started their radio careers back in 1939, when they were featured in a southern network program that aired over WTS in Columbia, SC.
While they had over 500 songs in their repertoire, ranging from ballads to comedy number to gospel tunes, the fans in their listening area - in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida were especially fond of the gospel music.
