About The Artist Mel Cass was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. We first learned about Mel from an old booklet that Jake Taylor put out around 1938 for his Rail Splitters group. The booklet included a small biography of Mel. Mel's page told fans he first got a violin about the age of sixteen. He had no thoughts of becoming a performer back then, but he kept at it. He told readers his playing came to the attention of a local radio performer in the area at that time, Jake Taylor in 1933. He accepted the opportunity to join Jake's group and shortly afterwards, he took two days off to marry the love of his life. Credits & Sources
