Singing cowboy Randy Atcher dies
Associated Press
Randy Atcher, the singing cowboy on a WHAS-TV children's program for
nearly 20 years, died today. He was 83.
"T-Bar-V," featured Atcher, with his 10-gallon hat and guitar, and
his sidekick, the late Tom "Cactus" Brooks. Some of Atcher's best
known songs were "Happy, Happy Birthday," "Get Yourself a
Savings Bank" and the "T-Bar-V" theme, which encouraged kids
to "brush your teeth each morning, get lots of sleep at night."
Atcher had been fighting cancer and was at home a week before
his death at a hospice in Louisville, said his wife, Betty. His condition
worsened considerably during the past week, she said.
"T-Bar-V" aired from 1951 to 1970. Brooks, who was the brother
of the late actor Foster Brooks, died at age 87 in 1997.
Betty Atcher estimated that her husband sang the birthday song to
more than 150,000 children.
