About The Artist

Information is scarce at this time about Charlie Holbrook and his Lazy H Ranch Boys, but something is better than nothing.

Nicola and Rose Fantetti wrote in one of their 1946 columns "Behind the Scenes" for National Hillbilly News a bit about this group, but the article was more about one particular member of the band.

Charlie Holbrook and His Lazy H Ranch Boys had a Saturday morning show over WFMD in Fredricksburg, Maryland around 1946.

The Fantetti's were writing about one band member, Romin Carl, who came into the world in Moatsville, West Virginia. He entered a singing contest at the local county fair one year and won. That led to a stint with a rodeo show. His musical journey took him to WSVA in Harrisonburg, Virginia; WIJH in Baltimore and then to WFMD where he hooked up with Charlie Holbrook's group.

We learn from the Fantetti's that the group had just returned to Maryland after a tour of Pennsylvania and had plans to tour Tennessee. In the latter part of 1946, they were playing with the Alen Burmie Carnival in Maryland. After that engagement, they were to hit the road and tour the south.

Carl was a talented musician who could play the mandolin, banjo, harmonica but his favorite instrument was said to be the guitar. It was noted that he had a '...rather deep and mellow voice.'
