About The Artist

A letter to the editor of a magazine in 1947 was all that we could find on Cowboy Verne Morgan, a native of Peoria, Illinois. We learn that Verne started his musical endeavors at the early age of six. He went on to learn nine instruments, with his specialty being the electric, Spanish and steel guitars.

He first appeared on the radio with WMBD in his hometown of Peoria when he was just twelve years old, or around 1929. He later ppeared in various stations in the midwest, west and southwest before appearing on KSOO at the time the letter was published.

While he was in Memphis in 1937, he met and married his wife and they had six kids. When they were married, their wedding ceremony was carried over WMPS where he was working at the time.

Verne shared the stage with such acts as Smiley Burnette, Rufe Davis and Roy Acuff.

While at KSOO in 1947, he had two daily programs. One was at 11:00am that featured Verne and an accordionist by the name of Myron Floren. Some music fans might recognize that name, who was with the Lawrence Welk orchestra and show for many years. Back then, Myron was called "The Melody Man". At 5:30pm each day, Verne did a solo show.
