WSM Grand Ole Opry

About The Artist

Wendy Dawn was the professional name of Dottie Wheeler, the daughter of Orval (Dutch) and Jimmie (Clitton) Wheeler of Texas. The family did live in the Memphis, TN area for some time.

Wendy's first stage appearance was when she was just eight years old. She won first place in an amateur show at Wellington (TX) High School - she sang "Bimbo". Her prize was three silver dollars. The story was that he had stopped by the school after he had brought a bale of cotton to town. He did not go inside, but stood outside the auditorium to hear his daughter - he felt his clothes were not clean enough.

She married Jimmy Dale Hartsell in January 1960 in Memphis, TN. The couple moved to Nashville in 1968.

Her first recording was released on RCA Victor in August 1968 - "See One Man" b/w "Railroad Track Blues."

The Hartsells had three children: Shane, Andy and Kathy. Shane passed away on December 29, 1982; he had Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy.
