About The Artist

Al Dexter was a native of Jacksonville, Texas. In an article in an old folio, he is cited as not remembering much of his younger days other than a highlight when his dad bought the family an organ. He started scratching his musical itches trying out songs on that organ. Later on, he learned to play the mouth harp, banjo and guitar. He settled on the guitar for the most part as he felt that was the best instrument to use to accompany himself singing.

When he graduated from high school, he started writing songs and joined a traveling show of some type. Then later, managed to get his first radio program using a home-made guitar to accompany himself.

As is the case sometimes, a recording company talent scout heard Al doing one of his songs in New Orleans and immediately signed him on to make some records and by 1941, had been recording for some seven years.
