About The Artist Sherry Lee Myers was born in Hazel, Kentucky. A 1957 article told readers she started her singing career when she was just two and a half years old when she won an amateur contest. She won 14 more such contests from 1943 through 1946. In 1955, she won first prize on an amateur talent show sponsored by the Kane Country Fan Association in St. Charles, Illinois. Lou Black (then head of Talent Varieties) was at this contest and chose her to appear on his package shows. Even though she was only 16 at the time, the 1957 Cowboy Songs article mentions she had already worked with such country stars as Slim Wilson, Bil Wimberly and his band, Boyd Bennett, Pete Stamper, Pee Wee King, The Carlisles, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Roy Acuff and his Smokey Mountain Boys, Kitty Wells, Johnnie and Jack, Jean Shepard, Moon Mullins, Marvin Rainwater, Redd Stewart and on the list goes. But she did not stick with the name Sherry Lee Myers. She changed the direction of her career and gained fame recording under the name "Jackie DeShannon."
