About The Artist John Bynom Evans was born blind in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. However, he came to West Virginia to attend the school for blind in Romney. He then went to Charleston about 1920 where he spent the rest of his life. He operated a newsstand or just sold newspapers, sang on the streets, and later became part of the Union Mission Blind Quartet. Evans received his opportunity to record when Brunswick held field sessions in Ashland, Kentucky in February 1928. His recorded output consisted of four numbers, one of which was the child ballad "Three Nights Experience." He accompanied himself on guitar and afterward returned to his home in the state capital. He died of a heart attack; he was survived by his wife Wilmoth Ora Fisher Evans (whom he married in 1927). She passed away on October 28, 1958. His death certificate listed his occupation as "Gospel Mission Quartet." Credits & Sources
